Paynter’s Paint Ranch is located south and west of Denver in Sedalia, Colorado, in the foothills of the majestic Rocky Mountains. Founded in 1988, it is owned and managed by Peggy and Wendell Cummings featuring American Paint horses carrying the lineage of COLOR ME SMART. Peggy and Wendell breed, raise, and show paints successfully in APHA, NRHA, NRCHA, and NCHA events. Paynter's Paint Ranch has 7 Reserve World Champions and 2 World Champions in APHA. Their signature Colorado registered brand is “Reverse Slash Bar Star.” They also own and operate LRC Silver Leather and Tack, a full service source for horse related products.


SMARTLITTLEJRFRECKLES,is an own son of COLOR ME SMART, out of a producing mare, Miss Zippin Freckles, a granddaughter of Colonel Freckles.


DIABLOS PAINTED DOC is the ranch stallion by JR RED DIABLO and won Junior Reining and the Bob Clark Memorial Award at the 2008 National Western Stock Show in Denver. Doc was the #1 horse on the APHA Honor Roll in Junior Reining in 2008.
Doc was also the 2009 APHA World Show Senior Reining Champion. He was #1 on the APHA Honor Roll Senior Working Cow Horse in 2009.

Peggy and Wendell have been APHA World Show competitors since 1995 and both have ridden the renowned Working Cowhorse, PICK A WINNER. “Winners” has earned a Superior in Amateur Working Cowhorse and Three Reserve World Championships. He also has numerous Top 5 and Top 10 Awards at the APHA World Show, as well as a myriad of other circuit and regional championship awards.


“Winners” at 21 is like one of the family. He was Peggy’s wedding present from Wendell and they have successfully shared him as they have continued to grow their horse business. Click on our Champions Page for more information about our athletic PPR horses.


SMARTLITTLEVALENTINE is one of the rising stars of PPR. So far, she has earned over $20,000 in NRCHA events and won the 2008 Sagebrush Slide Novice horse 5000 K and was second in the Open Derby. Valentine was the 2009 APHA RESERVE WORLD CHAMPION in Junior Working Cow Horse and in 2010 is was the APHA RESERVE WORLD CHAMPION in Sr. Working Cow Horse. She was 3rd at the 2009 Open Derby in Ardmore. She was #1 in Open Hackamore in the NRCHA South Central Region in 2009. She is now retired from the show ring to our broodmare band is bred to Playboy's Buck Fever for a 2012 foal.


SMARTLITTLESWEETHEART, or Holly, as we call her, is another rising star. She was the 2011 APHA WORLD CHAMPION Junior Working Cow Horse, ridden by Robbie Boyce. Look for her to have a fantastic future career with Robbie riding in NRCHA events in 2012 and 2013.


We are very proud of the accomplishments of Paynter's Paint Ranch horses at the APHA World Show this year! Zipper, on the far left in this photo, was third in the Reining Challenge, Holly, in the middle, was WORLD CHAMPION in Junior Working Cow Horse and Doc, on the far right, was RESERVE WORLD CHAMPION in both Limited Amateur Working Cow Horse with Wendell riding and Open Senior Working Cow Horse with Robbie Boyce riding. Doc was a real trooper at the World's, as he was entered in one class each day. He adjusted well to three different riders. Peggy rode him to a Top Ten finish in Amateur Reining as well.
